M06: Data Analytics in Fan Mobility

Supervision: Sascha von Behren & Matthias Cremer-Schulte

When thousands of people flock to the stadium at the same time on game day, urban and regional transportation networks regularly reach their limits. But how can these massive and highly dynamic mobility flows be captured and analyzed using data? Managing traffic for sports and major events is a key area of transportation planning that is increasingly opening up new perspectives through modern analytical methods. In this M-Project, you will examine fan mobility from the perspective of data analytics. The project’s focal point is soccer, and the goal is to explore various data-driven methods to investigate the mobility behavior of attendees.

Your responsibilities:

  • Research and Concept Development: Familiarize yourself with the current state of research on data-driven analysis of event and fan mobility.
  • Method Development and Analysis: Exploratory application and comparison of various data analytics methods (e.g., spatial analyses, survey data, mobile phone data) to evaluate complex mobility flows.
  • Synthesis and Reflection: Processing the identified mobility patterns and critically evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of the analytical methods and data sources used.

Provided the project results are of sufficiently high quality, the goal is to jointly publish the findings as a scientific paper in an international peer-reviewed journal following the completion of the project.
