What does car dependence mean?

Our doctoral student, Matthias Cremer-Schulte, posed this important question in his first dissertation paper, which was published last week in the journal Transport Reviews.

Along with our former department head, Prof. Eva Heinen from ETH Zurich, and Prof. Bert van Wee from Delft University of Technology, Matthias wrote the article titled "Stuck in the driver's Seat: a conceptualization for understanding car dependence and its determinants."

The paper explores the complex factors contributing to car dependence, emphasizing that these factors should not be analyzed in isolation. Instead, car dependence should be viewed as a multifaceted concept that requires a comprehensive analysis. You can access the full paper here.

As announced a few weeks ago, Matthias will have the opportunity to present his research to an international audience at the TRB Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., next month.
